Israel Defense Forces (IDF): Military Branches and How to Get In
Service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is not just an obligation but an important stage in the lives of most citizens of the country, as well as an opportunity for new immigrants to integrate into Israeli society. Understanding the structure of the army, its branches, and the draft procedure helps both future soldiers and their parents better prepare for this period. For Russian-speaking residents of Israel who are looking for information about service, work, or housing, the availability of data in their native language is important. Our classifieds board offers a unique opportunity: every listing is automatically translated into English, Russian, Arabic, and Hebrew. This means that you can post information about looking for work, housing, or services in Russian, and it will be instantly understood in all four main languages of the country, which significantly expands your audience and speeds up the resolution of any matters.
Structure and Main Branches of the IDF
The Israel Defense Forces consists of three main branches of the armed forces: ground forces, air force, and navy. Each of them performs specific tasks to protect the country. The ground forces are the largest component and include infantry, armored, artillery, engineering, and intelligence units. The Air Force is responsible for air superiority, reconnaissance, and strikes, while the Navy protects maritime borders and ensures port security. In addition, there are elite special forces units, such as Sayeret Matkal or Shayetet 13, service in which requires special physical and psychological preparation. For new immigrants who want to find work related to the defense sector or are simply interested in military topics, it is useful to know that on our platform in the Jobs section you can find current vacancies, including in civilian fields adjacent to the army.
Draft Procedure and Requirements for Candidates
Draft into the IDF is regulated by the Military Service Law. Israeli citizens who have reached the age of 18 are subject to conscription, with the exception of certain categories (for example, religious girls who have received an exemption, or persons with serious medical contraindications). The process begins with receiving a draft notice, after which the conscript undergoes a series of checks: a medical commission, psychotechnical tests, and an interview. Based on these data, the level of fitness (profile) and assignment to branches are determined. New immigrants often receive a deferment for several months to study Hebrew and adapt, but after this period they are drafted on a general basis.
How to Get into the Desired Unit: Tips and Opportunities
Many conscripts strive to get into specific elite or technical units. To do this, it is important to perform well in preparatory courses (mechina), improve physical fitness, and, critically, have a sufficient level of Hebrew. There are also programs for new immigrants, for example, Giyus Meuchad or preparatory departments that help pass the selection. If you are looking for housing near a military base or want to rent an apartment to military personnel, pay attention to the Real Estate section on our website. There you can post a listing that, thanks to automatic translation, will be available in four languages, which will simplify the search for reliable tenants or buyers.
Life After Service and Using Army Experience
Service in the IDF provides not only military skills but also develops leadership qualities, discipline, and the ability to work in a team. Many soldiers acquire technical specialties that later help them find highly paid work in the civilian sector. After demobilization, doors open for young people into various industries: from high technology to logistics and management. If you want to sell or buy military equipment, a car, or find tutor services to prepare for the draft, take a look at the Auto and Services sections. Our platform automatically translates all listings, removing language barriers.
